How to choose restaurant billing software

In short: test any restaurant billing software during your real busiest hour, and check the total yearly cost, GST handling, printer support and delivery-app needs before you commit. "Free" and "best" mean little until you have run a service on it.

1. What is the total cost for a year?

Add the subscription, add-ons, setup, hardware and any fee per transaction. Ask what happens when you pass a free plan's limit.

2. Does GST work the way your business needs?

Check the rate, whether prices include or exclude tax, and how your GSTIN appears on the bill. Ask your accountant which rate applies to you. Celstix, for example, uses a fixed 5% added on top, which will not suit every restaurant.

3. Will it print on your printer?

Print a bill and a kitchen ticket on your own printer before you decide, not on a demo device.

4. Do you depend on delivery apps?

If a large share of your orders comes from Swiggy or Zomato, an integration may save hours. If you serve dine-in customers, you may not need it. Celstix does not have one.

5. Do you really need inventory now?

Stock and recipe tracking only pays off if someone keeps it up to date every day. If you do need it, rule out tools without it, including Celstix.

6. Can you limit what each person sees?

A waiter should not see monthly revenue. Test the roles you will use.

7. What happens when the internet drops?

Unplug the router in your trial. Find out what still works, and what happens to bills made while offline.

8. Can you take your data out?

Export your sales as a file during the trial, so you know you can leave.

A simple test plan

  1. Shortlist two or three tools. Our comparison is a starting point.
  2. Enter your real menu.
  3. Run a real lunch or dinner with your staff.
  4. Compare the day's total with your cash and UPI.
